Understanding One of the Most Important Academic Accreditations in American Higher Education

When choosing a university, students often compare degree programs, tuition fees, campus life, and career opportunities. However, one of the most important indicators of academic quality is often overlooked: accreditation.

For students considering an American degree, accreditation plays a fundamental role in demonstrating that a university meets recognized academic standards and is committed to continuous improvement.

Touro University, including Touro Berlin, is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), one of the most respected institutional accrediting agencies in the United States.

Understanding what MSCHE accreditation means helps students make informed decisions about their education and the value of their future degree.

What Is the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)?

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the United States Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

MSCHE evaluates colleges and universities to ensure they meet established standards of educational quality, institutional effectiveness, and continuous improvement. Rather than focusing on individual programs, MSCHE evaluates universities as institutions, reviewing how they fulfill their educational mission, support students, manage academic quality, and maintain high standards across all areas of the university.

Its accreditation process promotes accountability, institutional self-evaluation, innovation, and long-term academic excellence through rigorous peer review.

Why Accreditation Matters

Accreditation is much more than an official recognition. It demonstrates that a university has undergone an extensive evaluation process and continues to maintain recognized academic standards over time.

For students, accreditation provides confidence that the institution is committed to delivering a high-quality educational experience supported by structured academic processes and continuous institutional improvement. Rather than being a one-time achievement, accreditation represents an ongoing commitment to excellence.

Accreditation Is a Continuous Process

MSCHE accreditation is not permanent. Institutions undergo reaccreditation every eight years through a comprehensive review process that includes preparing a detailed institutional self-study followed by a site visit conducted by a team of MSCHE peer evaluators.

This process encourages universities to evaluate their own performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and demonstrate how they continue fulfilling their academic mission. Continuous review helps ensure that accredited institutions maintain high standards while adapting to changes in higher education.

Touro University's MSCHE Accreditation

Touro University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

This accreditation covers Touro University together with its branch campuses, locations, and instructional sites in the New York area, as well as branch campuses in Berlin, Illinois, Jerusalem, and Moscow.

For students studying at Touro Berlin, this means they are part of the same accredited university system that operates internationally while maintaining recognized American academic standards.

Touro University's Recent Accreditation Process

Touro University's accreditation was reaffirmed on November 19, 2015. On March 4, 2021, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education confirmed that Touro University's Mid-Point Peer Review had been conducted successfully and that no additional evidence was required.

The university then entered its next reaffirmation process during Fall 2023 and Spring 2024, continuing its regular cycle of institutional evaluation and improvement. These milestones reflect Touro University's ongoing commitment to maintaining the academic standards required by MSCHE.

Touro Berlin's 2024 Accreditation Visit

As part of the accreditation process, Touro University Berlin was visited and audited in March 2024.

The evaluation was successfully completed through the combined efforts of the university's administration, faculty, students, and management, supported by the leadership of Touro University New York. The successful outcome reflects the collaborative work of the entire Touro Berlin community and its commitment to academic quality.

Why MSCHE Accreditation Matters for Students at Touro Berlin

Touro Berlin offers students the opportunity to study in Germany while earning a degree within an American-accredited university system. As a campus of Touro University New York, Touro Berlin combines American academic standards with an international learning environment in Berlin.

Students complete their studies entirely in English while becoming part of a university community that emphasizes academic quality, personal support, and global perspectives.

MSCHE accreditation forms an important part of that educational foundation, demonstrating the university's commitment to recognized standards and continuous improvement.

Touro Berlin is part of the worldwide Touro University family. Students benefit from studying within an institution that combines international education, small class sizes, and a supportive academic environment with the quality assurance provided through institutional accreditation.

This allows students to pursue an American degree while living in one of Europe's most international cities.

Choosing an Accredited University

Selecting a university is one of the most important educational decisions a student will make. Accreditation helps students understand how institutions demonstrate academic quality, accountability, and long-term commitment to educational excellence.

Through its accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Touro University—and its Berlin campus—continues to provide students with an educational environment built on recognized academic standards, institutional responsibility, and continuous improvement.

For students looking to earn an American degree in Germany, MSCHE accreditation represents an important part of the academic foundation that supports the Touro Berlin experience.
