Festival of Lights Berlin 2026: When Art, Technology and the City Come Together
Discover One of Berlin’s Most Spectacular October Events
Berlin is a city that constantly finds new ways to reinterpret itself. Historic buildings stand beside contemporary architecture, former industrial spaces become cultural venues, and technology frequently becomes part of the way art and culture are experienced. Every autumn, one event makes that transformation especially visible.
From October 9 to 18, 2026, the Festival of Lights Berlin 2026 will illuminate landmarks, buildings and public spaces across the German capital, transforming familiar architecture into an enormous open-air gallery of light, color and digital art.
The 2026 edition marks the 22nd Festival of Lights and takes place under the theme “Colours of Love.” Over ten evenings, light installations, artistic architectural staging and 3D video mapping will transform locations across central Berlin.

For international students, the festival offers more than beautiful photographs. It is an opportunity to explore Berlin after dark, experience how technology and creativity can interact, and discover some of the city’s most important landmarks from an entirely different perspective. For students at Touro Berlin, it is another example of what studying in Germany’s capital can offer beyond the classroom.
When Is the Festival of Lights Berlin 2026?
The Festival of Lights Berlin 2026 takes place from October 9 to October 18. According to the official festival program, the installations can generally be seen daily from 7:00 PM until 11:00 PM, although individual installations may have different schedules.
The main outdoor Festival of Lights is free to visit, making it particularly attractive for students looking for an evening activity that allows them to experience Berlin without adding another expensive attraction to their budget.
Rather than taking place inside one venue, the festival spreads across different parts of Berlin. Visitors can walk between installations and experience the city itself as part of the exhibition.
“Colours of Love”: The Theme for 2026
Each edition of the Festival of Lights is built around a central idea, and in 2026 that theme is “Colours of Love.” The organizers describe love as something with many different facets and forms of expression. Throughout the festival, artists use light, architecture, color and music to interpret the theme across Berlin. That concept fits particularly well with the city.
Berlin brings together people from an enormous range of countries, cultures, languages, identities and personal histories. For international students, this diversity is often one of the most noticeable characteristics of living and studying here.
During the Festival of Lights, that international character becomes part of a shared public experience. Residents, students and visitors move through the same streets and gather in front of the same installations, temporarily turning the city into a collective cultural space.
See Berlin’s Famous Landmarks in a Completely Different Way
One of the most exciting aspects of the Festival of Lights is seeing familiar Berlin landmarks transformed through digital projections and artistic illumination. The Brandenburg Gate is among the major locations confirmed for 2026 and will feature a 3D video mapping show.
The Berlin TV Tower at Alexanderplatz will also become part of the festival through 3D video mapping, while St. Mary’s Church will receive an artistic architectural staging. The program continues through the historic Nikolaiviertel, where several streets, buildings and public spaces will feature video installations, colorful illuminations and light art.
Visitors can then continue toward some of the monumental architecture of central Berlin.
The Berlin Cathedral is scheduled for projection mapping, while Humboldt University, the State Opera, St. Hedwig’s Cathedral and several buildings around Bebelplatz and Unter den Linden are also included in the 2026 program.
Further west, the festival reaches the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz. The result is not simply a collection of isolated installations. Walking through the Festival of Lights can become a nighttime journey through Berlin’s architecture and history.
Where Technology Meets Art
The Festival of Lights is also interesting because the artworks depend on more than traditional artistic techniques. Large-scale projection mapping, digital animation, lighting systems, sound and architectural staging all require technology to transform creative concepts into experiences that can work across enormous buildings. A façade becomes a screen. Architecture becomes part of an animation. Music can become synchronized with moving images and light.
For students interested in technology, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics or Business, events like the Festival of Lights can offer another way of thinking about the industries surrounding digital innovation.
Technology is not limited to software companies or laboratories. It increasingly influences entertainment, communication, architecture, marketing, cultural experiences and public spaces. The festival demonstrates what can happen when technical knowledge and creative thinking meet.
Festival of Lights in Concert at Berlin Cathedral
The 2026 program goes beyond outdoor installations. From October 13 to 17, the Festival of Lights in Concert will take place inside the Berlin Cathedral, combining immersive 3D video art with ambient and electronic music.
The announced artists include Alle Farben, Klangkarussell, Westbam, Anja Schneider, Chris Bekker and Ukai Ndame. The concerts transform the interior architecture of the cathedral through projections designed to interact with sound and space.
