Prof. Dr. Tuchel studied political science in Hamburg and Berlin. Between 1988 and 1991, he worked on the staff of the Berlin Senate. Since 1991, he has been the executive director of the German Resistance Memorial Center in Berlin.
In addition to teaching at Touro College Berlin, he holds a professorship (apl.) at the Free University. Between 1997 and 2006, he served as an expert consultant for the proceedings of the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Section of the Department of Justice in Canada. He has also worked for the Office of Special Investigations of the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
He has published extensively on the issues of persecution and resistance between 1933 and 1945 – especially on the system of German concentrations camps, the Gestapo, and various locations of Nazi terror.
